The Independent Motor Dealers Association (IMDA) has achieved a significant milestone by reaching 1,000 members in less than six years since it's establishment. The primary purpose of IMDA is to unite independent dealers within the UK automotive retail industry, offering them a platform to share best practices, seek support, and address issues that typically affect this fragmented sector.
As a member of IMDA, dealers gain access to various benefits, including free legal advice, DVLA assistance, connections with over 50 supplier partners providing services and products for used car dealers, and a comprehensive service support network. The association's chairman and co-founder, Umesh Samani, who also owns Specialist Cars, a used car dealership, and Harris Motor Company, a neighbouring workshop in Stoke-on-Trent, expressed the association's main goal was to bring together these dealers under a recognised body, providing them with a collective voice and support.
Despite reaching the impressive milestone, Samani acknowledges that there is still a long way to go, and he aims to continue promoting the IMDA's name to encourage more high-quality independent dealers to join the association. One of the cornerstones of IMDA membership is adhering to a code of conduct that upholds consumer protection standards, following the principles of Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) set by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), as well as complying with the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Consumer Duty.
Umesh Samani expressed immense pride in the association's progress, especially considering the initial skepticism they faced when establishing IMDA in 2017. He credited the success to the dedication and support of the founder members, current committee members, and partners who have contributed to the growth and representation of independent motor dealers—both non-franchised and franchised—within the network.
Last November, at Automotive Management Live, Umesh Samani and several IMDA members engaged in discussions on key industry issues, such as sourcing used car stock and enhancing customer experience.
The IMDA's achievements highlight its significance in providing a cohesive platform for independent motor dealers, fostering a sense of community and collaboration, and working collectively to improve standards and services in the UK automotive retail industry. As the association continues to expand and establish its presence, it aims to bring more independent dealers into its fold, amplifying its voice and influence in the sector.
