Saab, the once-defunct brand, made a remarkable comeback this month, surprising the used car industry with its Saab 9-3 becoming the fastest-selling used car on the Motors.co.uk platform. Saab, a Swedish manufacturer that launched its first car in 1947, unfortunately faced bankruptcy in 2011. However, production continued under the Chinese consortium National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), until NEVS also filed for bankruptcy protection in 2014, leading to the abandonment of the Saab trademark in 2016.
The unexpected resurgence of the Saab 9-3 on the used car market was driven by a surge in demand for its convertible versions, propelling it to the top of the Motors.co.uk chart of quick sellers. Impressively, these Saab 9-3 cars spent an average of just over 19 days on dealer forecourts before being snapped up by eager buyers. In fact, the entire top 10 used cars on Motors.co.uk in July managed to sell within four weeks, defying the wider market's trends.
Lucy Tugby, the marketing director of eBay Motors Group, the parent company of Motors.co.uk, commented on the diverse mix of makes and models that dominated the fastest-selling list in July. The top 10 encompassed both mainstream and premium brands, featuring everything from small hatchbacks to large executive saloons and SUVs.
Tugby highlighted the surprising success of the Saab 9-3, a discontinued model from a brand that no longer exists, as it became a favourite among buyers seeking affordable Swedish classics. The convertible versions proved particularly popular, aligning with the early summer season, and leading to an impressively short time on dealer forecourts.
The broader used car market faced challenges with supply shortages, leading to an average selling time of 39.5 days on Motors.co.uk in June. However, the top 10 fastest sellers in July performed remarkably better, selling within an average of under four weeks.
The rest of the top 10 quickest-selling used cars on Motors.co.uk included the Tesla Model 3, Citroen C4 Cactus, Volvo S90, Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, MG3, BMW X4, Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Compass, and DS Automobiles DS 3. These cars all enjoyed relatively short stays on dealer forecourts, ranging from 20.4 to 27.9 days.
In conclusion, the Saab 9-3's surprising resurgence as the quickest-selling used car on Motors.co.uk in July captured the attention of the used car industry. It's popularity, alongside other diverse models in the top 10, demonstrated the resilience and diversity of the used car market in the face of ongoing supply challenges.
